My Childhood Seen In Hers

Tonight, Patricia finished reading "Anne of Green Gables" by L. M. Montgomery. It is a bit odd to see my childhood replayed in my daughters. Odd and ah, so sweet.

Like myself, Patricia adored the book. She would often come to Eric and I giggling while reading the book- Patricia just had to share with someone what she thought of "silly Anne" or "stern Marilla." The setting of the book captured Patricia's imagination also- just like it did for me when I was a child. I can remember playing out this book- I just loved the idea of wearing beautiful dresses, milking a cow & living on a beautiful farm. (And I still love the idea!)

I am looking forward to us watching an old PBS version from the library. It is so much fun to have a daughter to share these kinds of memories with! Oh, God is good! I think we will make some tea & pop popcorn for one of our "girl's nights."

Now, admittedly there is a bit too much romance in Montgomery's books. I'm thankful that, for now, Patricia doesn't notice or care for such things. :) But Eric and I must show caution- we will not put this kind of book into Patricia's hands often. A diet of romance would not be edifying. It is a challenge to have children who love to devour books. Finding quality literature for younger readers isn't always easy but this is a good problem to have.

One of the big goals of educating our children is to teach them to think and discern. Reading provides the perfect medium for this- if we as parents talk with our children. As a child, I got "lost" in a book far too many times without discerning the characters I idolized. I hope that my children can find some heroes in their books but I also hope that as they mature, they can learn to distinguish what is truly heroic.
