Read Aloud Thursday: January 20, 2011

No books celebrating Martin Luther King Junior Day. :(

BUT, today we did finish "Wise Words" by Peter J. Leithart. While we didn't enjoy a few of the stories (especially several of the beginning ones), overall, this was a really good read. Each chapter is a fairy-like story illustrating a Bible story or verse. The book claims that "these eighteen adventures echo and illustrate the lessons of Proverbs" but I think that is a stretch- many of the Proverbs didn't seem to fit the story but we did see correlation with other parts of the Bible. After reading each chapter (story), we would spend a few minutes talking about the Proverbs mentioned & the parts of the Bible the story illustrated. I was especially happy to see that the older three knew where in the Bible it was without me having to tell them! :) I'd recommend the book (just don' get it thinking it fleshes out the Proverbs exclusively), especially if your littles are 6 or older. We'll read this one again!

Having finished this, we started "The Long Winter" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It seems fitting that we are reading this book after last week's storm. The children have asked if we can try to make a green pumpkin pie like Ma did. So, IF our plans come through & we move this Spring and IF we can get a small garden planted in time, we'll try it. The children want to see if it really does taste like an apple pie. I love, love, love when books come alive for them! :)

Happy Reading!

That was how I felt about Wise Words. And definitely for older children than mine. I think M-girl would do pretty well, but the other two aren't quite ready for it.

"moving in the spring?" I'd love to hear more about that!

We're in the process of looking for a house w/ land- meeting w/ our realtor this Saturday to view 4 properties. Our lease is up in April.

Thanks for your prayers, Dawn.

Hmmm. . Wise Words looks like something that we might be able to use in the future. Thanks for the review!

Oh, my girls expected to have to crawl out the windows after we had our "big snow" last week. ;-) We can thank LIW for that image, I think.

So glad you linked up to RAT!!

Miss A got the audio CD of The Long Winter in her stocking on Christmas morning, and we listened to a good part of it on the way back from Canada. I still find it almost unbelievable how many blizzards they got that winter, and how bad they were! And it definitely makes me grateful for a warm house and lots of food!. :)

Hope your house hunting goes well today! Do you have to wait to move until your lease is up?

I remember my father reading each one of the stories from Wise Words aloud to us children several years ago! They remain in my mind as some of the most vivid illustrations of Biblical content, perhaps next only to Pilgrim's Progress. I am aware that not all of them go exactly with the Proverb that is listed, however they also incorporate other Scripture. I was reading just a couple of days ago in Matthew, and remembered the story of the king's house and the rock: "And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder" (Matt. 21:44). Truly there are only two choices: "There is no third choice."
